Nobody in the group has blogged about the world cup hence I thought I would write my blog about the 2010 soccer world cup. I am sure some of you will definitely be interested...:-) I wanted to check with you guys if the goal saved by Uruguayan striker by handballing was ethical and who is to be blamed for it? I am not sure if Luis, the Uruguayan striker, was aware of his actions or if he did it purposely. I would say it was not ethically and he was punished for that incident by handing out the red card and sending him out immediately. Everything happned by the FIFA rule book but I would still question the rules of the game. By FIFA rules if a player handballs purposely to save or score a goal then he is punished by showing a red card and a 1 game ban. The fault lies there instead of the players morality. In my opinion FIFA is allowing the cheating to happen and is even rewarding for cheating. In this case Uruguay was rewarded by not awarding the goal to Ghana. The governing body should create an environment and rules for the game to be played ethically. FIFA can and should try technology to detect fouls and offsides which are questionable. There are many others sports which award the points instead of the penalty shoot in soccer. In the game of cricket if you purposely or mistakenly put your leg in front of the wickets(or base) you are decleared out. And technology is used in cricket to ascertain the ball trajectory and make the decision. Even in basketball the basket is awarded if the ball was almost going inside the basket. If it were to be in Rugby, it would be called "Penalty Try", but in football, if you're luck, a penalty would be given and the chances of you scoring is 50%!Cheating happens in all sports but if the rules are correctly set and there are harsh penalties for infractions, cheating can be avoided and games can be played fairly. The whole world is talking about how Uruguayan striker cheated but no one is talking about taking appropriate action to mend the rules so that such incidences dont occur in the future!!!

Which smartphone do I buy? iPhone4 or an Andriod Phone!
Hi guys
I am currently researching about smartphones. I want to purchase a new smartphone but I am still deciding whether I should buy the iPhone or a Andriod phone. In my opinion the iPhone 3GS looks much better than the iPhone4 and I hate AT&T because they cancelled the unlimited data plan. I like the iPhone for the many apps written for iPhone but I am sure all those apps are being ported or will be ported soon for Andriod phones. From my reading I know that the Andriod 2.2 has lot of cool features which are closing the gap between iPhone and the Andriod phones. Even Steve Jobs had acknowledged that Andriod phone market share is growing rapidly and challenging the iPhone growth. So I am still thinking if I should go for the iPhone4 or wait for a cool Andriod 2.2 phone.
I currently have a phone provided by the company but I only use it for reading emails and making phone calls. I can surf the internet via my phone but the browser sucks and it doesnt have the touch screen.
So here is why I need to have a smartphone?
1) To locate places to find nearby restaurants or gas stations or ATMs etc. I was in NY city in May this year and I had to walk 5 blocks to get to a Subway Sandwich store. If I had a smartphone with me I would easily located the one which was a block away from my location. Also, if the phone can serve as a GPS device then that eliminates the need for a separate GPS in the car.
2) Track my investments and Trade via the smartphone. I know there is an Fidelity iPhone app but apps for other smart phones are also supported.
3) Surf the net and read news on the phone.
4) I need a multitasking phone...I should be able to read news, make phone calls or listen to music at the same time.
5) Need a good phone to listen to music while I am driving or working in office or while I am jogging.
6) I need a phone with Keyboard, high end camera and good memory...and I want to be able to add or remove memory cards with iPhone you cant do that!!!
7) I want to good apps for the phone...for games, shopping, banking etc.
I know that the iPhone will address all or most of my above requirements and I know that most of you will recommend me the iPhone 4. But with AT&T cancelling their unlimited plan and Android-based phones coming up with really great features do you guys think I should wait?...In April, I had decided that I would go for the iPhone4 when it would be released. But I didnt like the new boxy design when I first saw a picture of the phone on the Apple site. The iPhone4 now looks like a Samsung or Motorola phone. The retina eye feature in the new iPhone is cool and the display is sharp and crispy but I have seen the some Driod phones, they have the same or better display. As of now the iPhone is the best in the smartphone market but do you guys think Andriod phones will beat the iPhone in the next 3-4 months???

Want to make some $$$
Hi Friends
Finally I have got some time to blog...Just think of how you would feel if you continuously worked for the last 48 hours with just 6 hours of sleep...pretty tried huh...:-) That’s what I just went through and here I am, after working 24 hours at a stretch writing my blog...:) and it’s about 1AM !!! Yes, the last 2 weeks have been pretty busy at work and I assume the next 2 weeks will be busy as well. So even though I am very very tired and I want to go to bed badly I am still very excited to blog because I always ready to discuss about stocks and the stock market. So my first posting is about a few stocks I owe and why I think others should owe them as well :). Well I have been watching and following these stocks for a long long time. So I feel I can feel their heart beat. I follow them every day and during every spare moment that I have. And with recent free software gadgets I follow them every minute....I get all the latest news and quotes at the click of a button. Anyway, with any further delay here are the 5 stocks that I like for the next 3-6 months.
AAPL: Apple Inc: This has been my darling stock. I have had it for a long time and sold it recently. I rode the economic slowdown in 2008 when the stock dived from $190ish to $78 and from there it has come all the way to 274.07. I sold it at 242! It has beaten street estimates every time it has reported for the last several quarters. And this quarter will be a stellar one as well with iPad and iPhone 4 releases. Even it is at its all time high the stock has some room to grow. I have been waiting for it go to $230. It did go to 230 when the European debt crisis cropped up. But it has come back up quickly. I am waiting to get in again at 240-250 level. Hopefully it will drop or else I will buy it for the short term. In my opinion Apple should hit 300 plus by mid Aug'10.
The second stock I recommend is SBUX or Starbucks. I bought this counter $25 and its 28. I guess it will go to $30. Starbucks has shown great commitment in diversifying their product mix and continues to grow international. They have recently launched instant coffee and several other products. Their Q2 2010 results were stellar with $2.5B in sales, 9% growth year over year, with same store growth of 7%. This is extremely impressive given where they were just 6-9 months ago. On the valuation front, Starbucks PE ratio is at 26 and is trading at around 2x sales, both of which are below their 10 year average. I think this a great stock to buy.
The third stock I want to talk about is AMGN Amgen Inc. I work for Amgen so I know things are getting better at Amgen. Amgen recently got approval a drug (Prolia) which has the potential to add billions of dollars in sales. Studies suggest that the drug is better than competitors at strengthening bones, opening the door to 8 billion dollar Osteoporosis drug market. However, I think stock will have very little upside for the short term. I would recommend buying the stock just before the company announces Q2 earnings. The company will raise its outlook and this should result in atleast $2 gain in a day.
The fourth stock I owe is UNP Union Pacific Corp. It is a railroad company and with the economy improving, demand for goods transportation should increase. Besides it also keeps my portfolio diversified. It is inching towards its 52 week high but still has lots of room to grow!!!
The fifth stock I want to talk about it JWN Nordstorm. From my reading and homework I feel the stock is bound to go $45 before it announces its earnings. With consumer demand increasing and with satisfactory spring sales one should see good return on investment in JWN.
Anyways it is getting very late and I need to crash into my bed. I will add more details about these and other stock in my next postings. I am no Jim Cramer or a professional portfolio manager but I hope you will like my posting. I will provide more details about these and other stocks in case you guys are interested. Also, I would like to hear from you about any stocks you would like to suggest. So that’s it for today.
See you all at class today…its 1:40AM
